Know Your Range
Research shows South Asians tend to carry more body fat — especially around the waist — than Europeans at the same BMI, and face higher risk of diabetes and heart disease sooner. That's why the WHO Asia-Pacific guidance used in India sets lower cut-offs than the global scale.
Underweight
Too little stored energy can mean low muscle, weaker immunity and constant fatigue.
Healthy
The range linked with the lowest risk of lifestyle disease for most adults.
Overweight
An early warning zone — the best time to tighten up habits before risk climbs.
Obese
Strongly linked with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
How BMI Is Calculated
- 01
Measure your height
Stand straight against a wall without shoes and convert the reading to metres (172 cm = 1.72 m).
- 02
Square it
Multiply your height in metres by itself: 1.72 × 1.72 = 2.96.
- 03
Divide your weight
Divide your weight in kilograms by that number: 70 ÷ 2.96 = 23.7. That's your BMI.
Pick your formula
Different units, same answer — every formula lands on the same BMI.
- Metres & kilograms
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² - Centimetres & kilograms
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (cm)² × 10,000 - Inches & pounds
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
23.7
Arjun is 172 cm and 70 kg. On the WHO scale he's comfortably healthy. On the Indian scale he's already overweight — an early nudge to watch his waistline before risk builds up.
BMI at Every Age
Children & teens
The maths is the same, but the result is plotted on age- and sex-specific growth charts (in India, the IAP charts) because body fat changes naturally while kids grow. Adult categories don't apply.
Adults
Standard categories apply. For Indian adults, the lower Asia-Pacific cut-offs give a more accurate picture of health risk than the global ones.
Older adults
Muscle naturally declines with age, so BMI can look healthy while strength drops. Focus on protein, resistance training and mobility — and let your doctor interpret your number.
Is BMI the Whole Story?
BMI is a brilliant first check, not a final verdict. Here's what it gets right, where it falls short, and what to measure alongside it.
Where BMI shines
- Takes seconds and needs only a tape and a scale
- Reliable for screening large groups of people
- Great for tracking your own trend over months
- Flags weight-related risk early
Where it falls short
- Can't tell muscle from fat — lifters often read high
- Ignores where fat is stored, like around the belly
- Doesn't account for bone density or body frame
- Not meant for pregnancy, children or the very elderly
Pair it with
Waist circumference
For Indian adults, aim for under 90 cm (men) or 80 cm (women), measured at the navel.
Waist-to-height ratio
Keep your waist under half your height. A ratio below 0.5 is a simple, strong health signal.
Body fat percentage
A smart scale or DEXA scan shows how much of your weight is fat versus lean mass.
